1. What style and finish the faucet will be?

It is always good to consider the style of the kitchen so that the faucet blends in seamlessly. You can choose whether you want a traditional style faucet or a modern one. The most popular finish is stainless or spot resistant stainless, but for some models chrome or bronze are available, too.

2. Will the faucet be a separate piece or will you need coordinating items?

If a larger scale remodeling is on the way, people often choose to equip the whole kitchen or even house with coordinating fixtures and accessories. Then it is good to know before ordering what items are available. Check if there is a matching bar faucet, soap dispenser, towel rack. If you are planning for the whole house, make sure there are matching style available for the bathroom, too.

3. What are the ways of activating the sensors?

There are two types of sensors used in touchless kitchen faucets – those of motion and those of proximity.

A motion sensor will require a movement of your hand or other object to turn the water on. It will be running until there is a next movement or until a set time runs out.

A proximity sensor will turn the water on when it senses an object under the faucet and keep it on until the object is removed. It operates very much like the faucets seen in public bathrooms.

Also the location of the sensors can be different. There are faucets with sensors built right under the arch of the goose-neck. Move your hand or an object under the faucet, and the water will run. Move it again, and it will turn off. Only movements done at a certain speed are recognized as “movements”, but that is easy to get used to.

Some others have a motion sensor on the top and proximity sensors in the base. These you turn on by producing a wave of your hand above them. The water will be running until you wave again or a certain set time expires.

The proximity sensor in the base will allow you to get “quick” water by placing a cup or a bowl under the faucet. In this case, the water will be running while the object is there.

4. Is there a pull-down function available in the faucet?

Normally, touchless kitchen faucets come with pull-down function. You may need to check how long is the reach of the hose, if the retraction and docking of the sprayer are efficient and precise enough.

Check also whether there is a sprayer button that toggles the mode from stream to spray. For a faucet to be great, there should also be a pause function available right on the sprayer that allows you to hold the water while pulling the sprayer over the edge.

5. What kind of power do the hands-free sensors require?

The sensors can be powered either by the mains power via an AC adapter or by a set of batteries. Some faucets have both options available while some others offer only the AC option. If you don’t have a mains socket anywhere close to where the faucet will be installed, you need to plan how to channel the power to the faucet using a suitable extension cord. Remember also that only sockets with earthing are allowed.

Both AC and battery options have their advantages and concerns. With AC power, you don’t need to think of changing batteries. However, when power is restored after a power cut, the faucet can turn on. Also occasional fluctuations in voltage can cause the same. So using battery power in areas where there are frequent power cuts may be a good idea.
